A Focus on Innovation

We are proud of our work in our strategic focus areas to end homelessness, improve health and educational outcomes and support the ongoing social justice work of the Catholic sisters. But we consistently hear the troubling statistic that one in three  Clevelanders live in poverty, including more than 50 percent of the city’s children. Over the last three years, we have learned how innovation, equity, systems change and policy advocacy could be leveraged to help our community address the challenging problems related to poverty. To begin to disrupt our multigenerational cycle of poverty, we will launch special initiatives to create innovative solutions that augment our core grantmakingportfolio.

Our first of these initiatives, The Innovation Mission, opened up this problem-solving approach to individuals and their respective organizations to bolster their abilities to test and develop solutions to tough social problems.

The Innovation Mission: Fighting Poverty with Big Ideas

Through The Innovation Mission fellowship pilot of 2017–2019, we invested in five passionate Clevelanders who have significant experience in their fields. We gave them the time and support to bolster their ability as innovators who can test and develop solutions to tough social problems. The fellowship gave them the opportunity to think differently, for the benefit of Cleveland’s poorest residents.

By opening up this problem-solving approach to individuals in the community, we hope to create a culture of innovation that supports idea-testing and risk-taking to find effective, impactful solutions.
