In conjunction with the Someday is Now: The Art of Corita Kent exhibit at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in Cleveland, the Sisters of Charity Foundation of Cleveland is hosting a program and discussion about the art of Corita Kent at the museum Friday, August 29 from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.

The exhibit surveys Corita Kent’s entire 30 years of work (1918-1986). Corita, as she was popularly referred to, was a former Catholic sister (Immaculate Heart of Mary) and influential graphic artist in the 1960s and 1970s. Her art combined faith, politics and teaching with messages of acceptance and hope. Her artwork continues to be an influence for many artists working today.

The August 29 program will include a presentation by a MOCA staff member about the exhibit followed by reflections from women religious artists about how Corita’s work influenced their work. Sister Diane Pinchot, OSU, will open the conversation with her reflections on how Corita’s art has influenced her work. Following the discussion, attendees can view the exhibit and join for a reception in the gallery lobby.

The program is part of the foundation’s strategic focus to lift the voices and stories of Catholic women religious in Northeast Ohio. Admission is free and open to Catholic women religious and friends.

Corita taught at the art department at Immaculate Heart College (IHC) from 1947 to 1968. At IHC, she developed her own version of Pop art, mixing bright, bold imagery with provocative texts pulled from a range of secular and religious sources, including street signs, scripture, poetry, philosophy, advertising and pop song lyrics. She used printmaking as a populist medium to communicate with the world, and her avant-garde designs appeared widely as billboards, book jackets, illustrations and posters. Together with her students, Corita sought out revelation in the everyday, exploring grocery stores, car dealerships and the streets of Hollywood for inspiration.
